"Good artists borrow, great artists steal." -Pablo Picasso
Don't know if you've ever heard that quote, but he said it, not me. I wanted to talk about stolen art which seams to be a pretty big issue on this site. I think we've all seen journals about how somebody's art work was re-uploaded onto somebody else's page. Now granted this is a problem and it's just plain mean, but in actuality, we all steal art.
"What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun." -Ecclesiastes 1:9
I'm reading an interesting book that talks about looking at artists, musicians, the people you admire, and copying them. Learn what they did and why it worked. Now publishing their works under your name is wrong, so give credit where credit is due. But through coping one, or several artists, you begin to merge styles and create your own.
Many people draw anime, but no one calls them out on copying Osamu Tezuka. In fact I would encourage copying your favorite artist. Analyze a single piece until you know you could paint it yourself. Then set up your workspace and see what comes out.
So I began this by stating that we all steal, and it's true, we all take bits of genius from those we look up to. But instead of ripping off their name and pasting your own, go create something with what you've learned.
